8 Quick Fixes When Your Garage Door Won’t Open

A garage door that won’t open is one of the most frustrating home problems — especially when you’re late for work. Before calling a repair service, try these troubleshooting steps that fix 60% of garage door issues.

1. Check the Remote Batteries

The simplest fix that people overlook. Dead remote batteries are the #1 reason for “my garage door won’t open” calls.

  • Replace batteries in the remote (usually CR2032 or AAA)
  • Try the wall-mounted button — if it works, the remote is the problem
  • Reprogram the remote if new batteries don’t help

2. Check the Power Source

Is the opener plugged in? Did a circuit breaker trip?

  • Check that the opener unit is plugged into the ceiling outlet
  • Check your circuit breaker panel for a tripped breaker
  • Try plugging a lamp into the same outlet to test power
  • Check for a GFI/GFCI outlet that needs to be reset

3. Check the Safety Sensors

Modern garage doors have photo-eye sensors at the bottom of the door opening. If they’re misaligned or dirty, the door won’t close (and sometimes won’t open).

  • Look for blinking lights on the sensors — solid = aligned, blinking = misaligned
  • Clean the sensor lenses with a soft cloth
  • Make sure nothing is blocking the sensor beam
  • Check that sensor wires aren’t damaged

4. Check the Lock Mode

Many openers have a “lock” or “vacation” mode that disables the remote. If you accidentally activated it:

  • Look for a lock button on the wall panel
  • Press and hold the lock button for 2-3 seconds to deactivate
  • Check if the wall panel shows a lock icon

5. Manual Release — The Emergency Cord

If the opener isn’t working and you need to get your car out NOW:

  • Pull the red emergency release cord (hangs from the track)
  • This disconnects the door from the opener
  • Lift the door manually — it should move freely
  • ⚠️ If the door is extremely heavy, a spring may be broken — don’t force it

6. Inspect the Springs

Broken springs are the most common mechanical failure. Signs include:

  • Loud bang from the garage (spring snapped)
  • Visible gap in the torsion spring above the door
  • Door feels extremely heavy when trying to lift manually
  • Door opens only a few inches then stops

⚠️ WARNING: Never attempt to repair springs yourself. They’re under extreme tension and can cause serious injury. Call a professional.

7. Check the Tracks and Rollers

Obstructions in the tracks or damaged rollers can prevent the door from moving.

  • Visually inspect tracks for debris, dents, or obstructions
  • Check that rollers are in the tracks and not broken
  • Look for bent track sections
  • Lubricate tracks and rollers with silicone spray (not WD-40)

8. Reset the Opener

Like any electronic device, sometimes the opener needs a reset.

  • Unplug the opener for 30 seconds, then plug it back in
  • Press the “learn” button on the opener to reprogram remotes
  • Check the opener manual for a factory reset procedure

When to Call a Professional

Call a garage door repair service if:

  • Springs are visibly broken
  • The door is off the tracks
  • Cables are hanging or frayed
  • The door makes grinding or scraping noises
  • None of the above fixes work
